The classes will offer practice through a variety of activities, including class discussions, oral presentations, small group work and individual assignments.

ELL Intermediate: This course is designed for students who have completed the Beginner course or who have a basic foundation in English. The course will focus on building and improving English grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills for communicating in everyday situations. The reading activities focus on comprehension and critical thinking skills. Activities include class discussions, group work and individual assignments.

ELL Beginner: This course is intended for students with limited English language skills. The focus will be to build a practical English vocabulary and understanding of basic grammar structures to communicate in everyday life. Class activities will give students practice in conversational English as well as reading and writing.

Note: New students will have placement test on the first day to place into Advanced class, or Intermediate class, or Beginner class

The certificate provides deeper theory, understanding and practice in the Behavioral Health field. The training focuses on two major areas of study. The first is the study of culture and how to understand cultural identity in diverse communities. The second is learning human communication and effective communication in diverse communities by working on emails, reports, improv, team play, roleplay, interpretation and analysis.

The instructor will assess your level on the first day of class. Once your level is determined, the instructor will inform you whether you belong to the 12:30–2:30 PM group or the 2:30–4:30 PM group.

Course Overview:Mass Bay’s Home Health Aide (HHA) Training Program is designed to prepare Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) to provide high-quality care to clients in their homes. This bridge program builds on the foundational skills acquired in the CNA course, equipping students with the additional knowledge and competencies necessary to support clients with their daily living activities, promote their independence, and enhance their quality of life.

Course Objectives:

• Expand on the skills and knowledge obtained in the CNA course.
• Develop proficiency in advanced caregiving skills, including personal care, nutrition, and household management.
• Learn effective communication techniques for interacting with clients, families, and healthcare professionals.
• Understand safety protocols and emergency procedures to ensure a safe home environment.
• Gain knowledge of infection control practices and health monitoring in the home.

Certification:Upon successful completion of the course, students will meet the state requirements for certification as a Home Health Aide in Massachusetts. Certification qualifies graduates to provide care in clients' homes, under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals.

Prerequisites:

• Completion of a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) course
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Basic proficiency in English (reading, writing, and speaking)
• Physical ability to perform HHA duties

Career Opportunities: Graduates of the HHA Training Program can pursue employment with home health care agencies, hospice organizations, assistive living facilities, and private clients. This certification also provides a foundation for further education and advancement in the healthcare field

Medical Interpreter Program: Open to all languages, this 60-hour program provides working knowledge of medical interpreting, including standards of practice, ethics, HIPAA regulations, cultural competency, and medical terminology/vocabulary. This course is designed for those preparing for entry-level careers as medical interpreters as well as for working interpreters preparing for the National Board Certificate exam. Students must be fully bilingual and must be fluent in English and one other language.

This program meets the National Board for Medical Interpreter Certification and/or Commission of Health Care Interpreter's training requirement and prepares you to pass the national certification exam. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a certificate of completion from the college and may elect to apply for national certification. Certification fees are not included. Students must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Because a language assessment is required, students must register at least two weeks in advance.

The ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is required for admission into many Nursing and Allied Health programs, including MassBay Community College.

This virtual course prepares students in all four TEAS subject areas: Math, Science, Reading, and English/Grammar. Classes are taught online in real time by live instructors, offering interactive support and practice in each area.

This workshop is designed for caregivers, healthcare professionals, and volunteers who wish to enhance their skills and knowledge in providing compassionate care for hospice patients and their families. Participants will explore the unique needs of individuals facing terminal illness and learn best practices for delivering holistic support. Key topics include: Understanding hospice care - overview of the hospice philosophy, goals of care, and the role of hospice in the continuum of healthcare; Communication skills - techniques for effective communication with patients and families, including active listening and addressing difficult conversations about death and dying; Emotional and spiritual support - strategies for providing comfort and support, recognizing the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their loved ones; Pain and symptom management - introduction to common symptoms in hospice care and methods for effective pain relief and symptom management and Caring for families - insights into supporting family members during the end-of-life journey, including coping strategies and resources available to them. By the end of the workshop, participants will be equipped with the skills and confidence to provide compassionate, patient-centered care, fostering dignity and comfort for hospice patients and their families during a critical time.
